September 17th marks the 223rd anniversary of the U.S. constitution.  This day is also known as Citizenship Day.  Previously, this day wasn't recognized as a holiday, but since 2004 it has been recognized as a federal holiday.  This day is a very important day for all American citizens.

What would America be like without the Constitution?

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/man-cerebral-palsy-climbs-el-capitan-raise-money/story?id=11644222

Stephen Wampler is a man with cerebral palsy who is using a specialized chair and the help of two friends to help him climb El Capitan. If he reaches the top, he will be the first person with CP to accomplish this. Wampler is married with two children. They started Camp WAMP in 2004.  He is climbing this mountain to raise money for the camp. He also wants to prove "that kids with physical disabilities can do more than they can imagine if they put their mind to it."

How many feet does he have to climb?

9/11 Anniversary

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-09-10-9-1110_ST_N.htm
Nine years after 9/11, there is more conflict than ever.  They include disputes over a proposed islamic center near ground zero and a Florida preacher's still uncertain plan to burn the Quran.  Most believe the day should be reserved for remembrance and prayer instead of conflict.  Many public gatherings are scheduled, some in support of the center and some in protest.  President Obama pled for tolerance.

How do you feel about the proposed building of an Islamic center near ground zero?

Obama's plans for Iraq

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/01/world/01obama-text.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=obama's%20plans%20to%20leave%20iraq&st=cse

President Obama, from the Oval Office, addressed the removal of American troops from Iraq.  50,000 troops are expected to leave Iraq by the end of next year.  President Obama stated: "Our combat mission is ending, but our commitment to Iraq's future is not."  He vowed that all troops would be gone by the end of next year, and that "the American combat mission in Iraq has ended."  He also told of his plans to "apply resources to Afghanistan to go on offense to break Taliban's momentum."  He wants the people of the United States to focus on the "urgent task of restoring our economy."

How Long did the Iraq War last?

Hurricane Earl

Hurricane Earl did not live up to the hype.  It was not even a really bad rainstorm, which many vacationers are happy about.  Earl had the potential to ruin many holiday plans.  However, the water may still be dangerous, with strong rip currents and rough surf conditions.

How many people changed their Labor Day plans because of Earl?
